Acquired in 1945, Door Bluff Headlands County Park is Door County’s only wilderness county park. Several hard-to-see Native American pictographs can be found there and it is believed to be the location of the bluffs where the Death’s Door legend occurred. (See Death’s Door Passage for more information.) During the late winter and early spring months, massive 30-40ft tall ice shoves can often be found along its shores.
Not far away (in Garrett Bay) lies the wreck of the Fleetwing---a 230-ton, three-masted schooner that carried lumber from port to port across the Great Lakes. It ran aground in 1988 due to low visibility and the miscalculations of its captain, who believed he was rounding the northern tip of the peninsula when he turned into the bay. The wreck now lies in 5-15ft of water and can be easily snorkeled or seen from a stand-up paddleboard or kayak.
